You should only ever buy a Jag if you can afford two of them. One to be in the shop, and the other to be the one that's actually running that day.

That was exactly the advice I heard from my father when I was a child and a neighbour bought a Jag. (It sure was pretty though.)

I also heard that they spend even more time in the shop if you don't drive 'em really fast for a while every week or two -- something about the engine getting gunked up if it doesn't get a workout. I don't know whether that's true or not, but it was part of the lore when I was a kid.

My ex-husband's uncle owned two Jags for precisely that reason. The same is true of Rolls Royce, apparently. British cars... pretty, but impractical.
